Initial setup[edit source]

Why are the pyramids arranged as they are in the initial setup? That is to say, I don't see an obvious rule for the initial setup. How did the current arrangement come to be? Was it the one that worked best in playtesting, or what?

Could we change the setup to follow a simple rule? Or even allow the players to cooperatively set up the board at the start of the game? That could have some cool strategic implications. maybe. -- Rootbeer 14:56, 7 May 2005 (GMT)

Well, the rule seems to be that you repeat small to medium to large to small in any of the directions that follow the edges of the board clockwise, (And you can start with any size piece anywhere because of the symmetry and the fact that five and three are relatively prime) but that's still hard to remember. -- GregF 22:43, 7 May 2005 (GMT)

Ah, I didn't see that pattern, thanks. I should have looked more closely. That's not too hard to remember, then. Thanks! -- Rootbeer 23:03, 7 May 2005 (GMT)
Yes, the initial setup was intended to by symmetrical. Having the players set up things as the first stage of the game (Dvonn-style) could get quite interesting, but it might also be too limiting. With the current setup, the board itself won't block movement, though the pieces on the board may. -- Jeremiah 18:59, 13 May 2005 (GMT)
