Talk:Main Page/Weekly images

Add topic
From Looney Pyramid Games Wiki

I have finished updating this page to include one unique image for each week--no more repeats. The new images were largely photographed at some point by me (for easy permissions). Those images not taken by me were either used with Creative Commons licensing from BGG or brought in from other parts of Icehouse.org itself. I also fixed the table formatting to display all 54 weeks and made sure the images were universally displayed at 250px when appearing on the front page. I editted Main Page/Picture for Week 20 and 21, but I'm not seeing the changes on this page. (Yes, I shift-refreshed, and switched browsers.) Temporary weirdness, or something far more sinister?

But that makes a four-week rotation, at least. -- GregF 23:57, 7 May 2005 (GMT)

I'm seeing your changes right away, fwiw. But there's sure some weird caching issue involving these images. Let us know if you're still not seeing the changes after a few hours, though. -- Rootbeer 00:19, 8 May 2005 (GMT)
I see it now. So short-term caching serverside, perhaps? -- GregF 00:36, 8 May 2005 (GMT)

Links in captions/tooltips[edit source]

To the amazement of everyone, MediaWiki is not yet free of bugs. One is that a link in an image caption results in broken tooltip text, because some MediaWiki coder didn't plan properly for people to put links there. (But cut them some slack. They get most things right.) You can see how the tooltips work fail to work with some of the upcoming weeks' images, if your browser displays tooltips. Usually, this happens when you pause the mouse pointer over the image, or if the image can't be viewed (perhaps because the user has a hand-held browser, for example, and doesn't download and display images by default).

I've taken the links out of captions on Main Page images recently, but I'm not 100% convinced that that's the right thing to do for the long term, broken tooltips be damned, because links are at least half the reason we're writing on a wiki and not papyrus after all. If this weren't the Main Page, I wouldn't even worry about it, in fact. But that's the page that gets the most hits, it's a new visitor's first impression, and it should look right.

Are there other issues that I haven't considered here? Does anybody feel strongly about avoiding broken tooltips or about including links in captions, or perhaps both? -- Rootbeer 00:22, 8 May 2005 (GMT)
