As a two-player game, it's a solid chess variant; not quite as deep, but quicker to complete. The real surprise is that the drones are your most important piece, with their ability to jump over removed spaces. Likewise, it's important to occupy the space in front of your home space, to keep it safe from removal. The queens are great for capturing drones and their non-linear movement options are fun, but they are a bit prone to getting trapped behind removed spaces and smaller pieces. However, the pawns seem almost useless except as decoys, particularly the ones on the edge.

It probably helped that I have a full hex board to place the chips on, leaving the lines across missing spaces easily visible.

The three-player variant seems prone to kingmaker problems, unfortunately.
