Requirements[edit | edit source]

Paint the Line is a game for two players. You need three Rainbow stashes, a 2x6 movement board, and a 3x6 scoring board. Printable boards are available in the Files section on this page.

About the Game[edit | edit source]

Players take turn capturing pyramids and placing them on the scoring board. Line up your scoring pyramids and break your opponent's lines to win!

Setup[edit | edit source]

On the 3x6 board, block off the second and fifth spaces in the middle row. Set up three trees of four different colors in the pattern below on the 2x6 board.

Row 1, left to right: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2

Row 2, left to right: 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4

Choose a player to go first using a method of your choice.

Gameplay[edit | edit source]

At the beginning of the game, players choose colors. Starting with the first player, each player chooses one small pyramid from any stack. Players alternate picking an unchosen color until all four colors have been chosen. Players score points at the end of the game for pyramids of their chosen colors.

Once colors are chosen, players take turns moving pyramids to capture other pyramids.

On his or her turn, a player moves one pyramid of any color on the movement board. Pyramids move a number of spaces equal to their pip count. They must move that exact number and can not backtrack or move diagonally. They do not need to move in a straight line. A pyramid can not move if another pyramid is stacked on top of it. Pyramids must finish their movement on top of another pyramid.

When a pyramid ends its movement on top of another pyramid, the pyramid landed on is captured. Only the top pyramid in a stack is captured when landing on a stack. Players may capture a pyramid of any color.

When a pyramid is captured, the capturing player places that pyramid in any empty square on the scoring board. If there are no empty spaces, place the pyramid on top of another pyramid on the scoring board instead. There may never be more than two pyramids stacked in a single space on the scoring board. A pyramid can not be stacked on another pyramid of the same color.

If it is possible for you to capture a pyramid on your turn, you must do so. If no move can capture a pyramid, the game ends and players proceed to the scoring phase.

The Scoring Phase[edit | edit source]

Every pyramid is worth a number of points equal to its pip count. For every group of your pyramids, add the total number of points of those pyramids and multiply that by the number of pyramids in that group. A group is any number of pyramids of the same color that are adjacent to each other. A single pyramid of a color is in a group of one. Diagonals do not count for adjacency. Only the top pyramid of a stack counts for scoring.

The player who scores the highest with his or her two colors combined is the winner. If there is a tie, the player with the largest group wins.

Scoring Example[edit | edit source]

Player one is red and green. Player two is yellow and blue. Only the pyramids on top of each stack are shown, since the bottom pyramids do not affect scoring.

Red has one group of two pyramids worth 8 points (4 pips x 2 pyramids) and a single large worth 3 points for a total of 11. Green has three single pyramids worth 5 points total and a group of two worth 8 points for a total of 13. The combined score for player one is 24.

Yellow has one group worth 10 points and a single pyramid worth 1 point for a total of 11. Blue has a single 2 point pyramid and a group of four worth 28 points (4 pyramids x 7 pips) for a total of 30. Player two has a combined score of 41 points and wins the game.
