What You Need

  • One unique Tree for each player
  • Two Martian Coaster Sets

Overview

Gravity Plane is a variant of Martian Coasters which allows up to eight players at once. The two boards made by the Martian Coasters are simply the opposite sides of the plane. Players will move to their designated "Transporter" coaster to move to the other "side" of the board and then move on to their goal from there.

Feeling that the five and six player variations were not really all that fair, I wanted something that would allow more players without making the game unbalanced in favor of one player or another and still allow all of the actions to be available. The starting position for five player Martian Coasters places all of the center coasters pieces no more than one coaster away from their goal and the six player variant removes hop as a valid move. This is one of the solutions that I came up with, I plan on adding another solution, variant which has a working title of Duplex. (A 2-12 player variant called Triplex will also be included).

The name comes from the AD&D space setting, Spelljammers.

Board Setup

The board consists of two sets of Martian Coasters set up in the standard pattern.
A B 2 1
C D 4 3
However, coaster 1 will match coaster D, coaster 2 will match coaster C, coaster 3 will match coaster B, and coaster 4 will match coaster A.

Explanation of Board Setup

Since the two boards are opposite sides of the same plane, this layout starts each players transporter coaster at the furthest it can be from the goal coaster.

Piece Setup

2-4 players: Setup the pieces on one "plane" as outlined in Martian Coasters.
Alternate 4 player setup: Setup 2 players on each "plane" as outlined in Martian Coasters.
5-8 players: Divide the number of players as evenly as possible between the two "planes" and setup as outlined in Martian Coasters for that many players.

Game Play

Play proceeds as normal for Martian Coasters with the following exceptions:

When a player alters the position of one of the coasters, they must alter the corresponding coaster to match. For example, if a player Hops A to just below D and rotates it 90 degrees clockwise, they must also hop 1 to just below 4 and rotate it 90 degrees counterclockwise.

Transporting from one side of the plane to the other is equivalent to moving one space, and if the player arrives on an occupied space, they "materialize" at the bottom of the stack.

A player will transport through the plane to the opposite side, therefore, transporting from coaster D will cause you to arrive at coaster 4.

A player can only transport from the center space (the space with the circles) of the tile of their color. (Just to clarify)
