Fred Cassidy is the protagonist of Roger Zelazny's Doorways in the Sand. Fred's education is supported by his grandfather's bequest until he graduates, so he takes great pains to never amass enough college credit in any one area. This, and his predilection for climbing university buildings, aggravates his advisor to no end. One day, mysterious persons start pursuing him, and Fred eventually finds out that an artifact from off-planet has disappeared while in his posession. What follows is a fun and suspenseful novel, presented masterfully in an unusual style. Each chapter begins en media res, and ends with a cliffhanger!
