A game for 2-4 players

Object

Get four pieces of the same size in a row. The large counts as a piece of either small or medium size.

Materials required

  • A chessboard
  • For each player, five smalls, four medium, and one large piece, of their chosen color(s).

If you have three Treehouse sets, you can use the following color pairings for a two player game: red and yellow, blue and green. If you have one Pyramid Arcade, you can use the following pairings: blue and purple, green and cyan, red and orange, yellow and clear. Or whatever makes sense to the players at the table.

Setup

Set the board down on the table. Each player takes all of the pieces of their color(s).

Play

The first player places a small in one of the sixteen interior spaces (any space two or more spaces from the edge of the board). There are no restrictions on subsequent piece placement.

On a player's turn, they may do one of the following:

  • Place a small in any unoccupied space
  • Remove two of your smalls from the board, or a large and a small, to place a medium in an adjacent space
  • Remove two of your mediums from the board, or a large and a medium, to place a large or a small in an adjacent space

Adjacent may be horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

Removal

When removing pieces from the board, the two pieces must share at least one adjacent (empty) space; they can, but don't need to be, adjacent themselves. Place the next piece in a space that is adjacent to both of the to-be-removed pieces, then take the removed pieces from the board and return them to your stash. You can only do this if you have a piece of the appropriate size remaining, or if the removal of the pieces from the board gives you a piece of the appropriate size.

If the large is removed from the board in this process it may be replaced in an adjacent space; it may "move" in this fashion. Once it is on the board the large is considered "wild", and counts as a medium or a small for all purposes (both removal and four-in-a-row). The only way to get the large on the board is to remove two mediums.

If a player does not have any smalls left, they must remove two smalls (or a large and small) to place a medium, or must remove two mediums (or a large and medium) to place a large. If they are unable to do either of these things, they lose.

Winning the game

A player wins if they get four pieces of the same size (small or medium) in a row (horizontally, vertically, or diagonally), or if the other player is unable to make a move. The large may substitute for a piece of either small or medium in this four-in-a-row.
